About Derwin
Derwin Dubose is a public affairs professional in North Carolina. He currently works as a policy and programs wonk but came to his current job after working in fundraising. In the midst of the current economic crisis, he raised over $2 million to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities at Duke Children’s Hospital, where he served as the organization’s chief fundraising officer.
Derwin is a Southerner. He was born in Mississippi and raised across the state line in Alabama before making North Carolina his home.
Derwin tries to be socially conscious. He is a proud resident of Durham, North Carolina, and was one of the first residents of Durham’s first affordable housing homeownership program. Dubose purchased a home in a transition area and signed a promise to stay for at least five years to help stabilize the new community. In 2004, he was recognized by the AARP as a Modern Civil Rights Leader.
Derwin really likes politics. A lifelong Democrat, Derwin has been active in his party and the North Carolina legislature, raising over $250,000 for Democratic House candidates and serving as an organizer for campaigns since 2006. He served as Director of Constituent Services for the North Carolina Democratic Party and finance director for the House Democratic Committee. In 2007, the Young Democrats of North Carolina named Derwin Young Democrat of the Year.
Derwin is not an idiot. Derwin graduated as a John Motley Morehead Scholar from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a history degree. At UNC, he served as co-president of the Campus Y, the largest student organization, and president of Chi Psi Fraternity, making him the first black president of any traditionally white fraternity. Additionally, he obtained a Certificate in Non-Profit Management from Duke University and is a fellow of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership.
Derwin tries to have a personal life. He’s interested in sports (particularly college basketball), good movies, live music, books, art, food and beer, cycling, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Derwin is also the proud parent of Nina, a border collie and rat terrier-mix puppy who loves squeaky toys, running in circles, and long walks.
